House Calls by Magic Maid
is built on a foundation of service and care.
While the business dates back to 1988, when
it existed as a franchise of a national corporation,
the company changed dynamically when present
owners Susan and Ray Berger purchased it
in 1995.
At that time, Susan and
Ray had relocated to Portland.
“We wanted to own a service business, where
we could help people,” Susan explains.
A commitment to care from the

Robin
Lynn |
Long-time employee Robin
Lynn, who joined the company in 1992, remembers
the change of ownership very well.
“Susan won me
over on her very first day,” Robin reflects. "She
met with all of us to ask for input and advice.
She let us know that we were the key to the
success of the company—she showed from the
start that we were valued and respected.
“One
of the first things Susan did was revise
our dress code. While this might sound trivial,
under the prior owner we were required to
wear skirts, which were impractical and uncomfortable.
On day one, Susan demonstrated her commitment
to her employees—she let us work in slacks,
which boosted our morale and our efficiency."
Steady
growth through the years

“We
are very careful to manage our
growth in such a way that we
maintain the positive company
culture that we’ve created.”

Since 1995, House Calls
by Magic Maid has steadily grown by adding
new clients as well as by making strategic
acquisitions of other local cleaning services.
Susan
points out, “We are very careful to manage
our growth in such a way that we maintain
the positive company culture that we’ve created.”
Robin
adds her insightful perspective, comments
that are echoed by many of her co-workers:
“Susan and Ray have created a company that
genuinely treats its employees like family,
and because they care so much about us, we
care about them and their success.
“We pride ourselves on cleaning
homes as if they were our own.”
